Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. – Romans 6:12 (NIV)
You must understand that, at Calvary, the power of sin over your life was broken. At Calvary, your flesh was crucified with Christ. Therefore, sin should no longer have dominion over you at all. You should overcome sin and the works of the flesh. You do not owe the flesh anything so you should not be under its dominion.
The second step is just as important as the first. If it is not taken properly you may not realize the victory that Jesus has given you over the flesh of sin. The first part speaks of what God has already done for you. There is nothing you can do to it. It is finished. All you have to do is to believe and appropriate it. However, there are certain things you have to do to make this victory God has purchased for you a reality. The Bible is very clear on what your role is. It is twofold.
First, do not yield your body to sin. Do not allow yourself to the cravings and desires of the flesh. Do not allow your body to be used as an instrument of sin. The devil will surely bring temptations. But if you do not yield, he cannot force you to commit sin.
We fall into temptation when there is a secret desire, a secret love for sin and a secret yielding to it right in our hearts.
Am I able to say ‘NO’ to temptation and sin?
Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to kill the flesh as I surrender my life totally to You and to say NO to the devil’s temptations. Amen.
Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.
