SCRIPTURE READING: Proverbs 12:17-22
“The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of his life on fire and in itself set fire by hell…” – James 3:6
Today’s reading, cautions about the wrongful use of the tongue. The gift of speech, expressing thoughts and feelings in language is only given to the human race. It can be used for good or for bad.
For example, the Justice System of our world is largely based on testimonies given by witnesses. A lying witness can cause an innocent person to be declared guilty, and vice versa.
The Bible strongly admonishes with all seriousness, that if we have to give testimony anywhere, concerning anybody or any issue, our word must always be honest and true, because false testimony can destroy a soul forever.
Wounds are not only caused by physical weapons. Reckless words can pierce like a sword. Unguarded, sarcastic, insulting, demeaning words can cause raw wounds in a person’s soul. The wise tongue brings healing. Sometimes a good word spoken in season can heal the downhearted. Let your tongue bring healing and restoration and not destruction.
• How do I use my tongue?
• Do I build people or cast them down by the things I say?
Dear Lord, season my tongue with salt so my word may heal my hearers.
Life and death are in the power of the tongue
