“THE LEADER LEADS THE WAY”

SCRIPTURE READING: Ezra 9:1-10

MEMORY VERSE:
“Therefore I urge you to imitate me.” – 1 Corinthians 4:16

In the last portion of verse 2 of today’s reading the writer makes a very damning statement about the leadership of Israel at the time: “…and the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness”.

In direct contravention of God’s directions Israel had intermarried with the Canaanite tribes around them. God forbade this intermarriage because the Canaanite tribes were steeped in idol worship along with other vile practices like child sacrifices, sexual debauchery, etc.

This direct disobedience included priests, Levites and other leaders and officials. Leadership, at every level is established by God to lead the people by word and deed. Christian leaders especially are supposed to be examples and models.

When leaders fall into sin, a door is opened for followers to enter. The exemplary lifestyle of the leader serves as a dam, which checks followers who are minded to do wrong. When the leader falls, the dam is breached and many are dragged in.

FOR MEDITATION:
• Do I play any leadership role in the church, workplace or school?
• What are my followers learning from me?

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, help me be the kind of leader that will draw all people to You. Amen

THOUGHT:
Bad leadership spawns bad following
