SCRIPTURE READINGS: Ephesians 6:17, 1 Thessalonians 5:8
The fifth armour is the helmet of Salvation. A helmet is worn on the head. The purpose is to protect the brain from any injury. The brain is the seat of the mind and the mind controls what people do. The mind directs the affairs of people. A sound mind gives good health. Putting on salvation as a helmet is to instruct you to hold on to salvation as the anchor of your Christian life.
We saw previously that the battlefield on which this entire spiritual battle is being fought is the mind of humanity. Because the mind is the battlefield, it has to be protected very well. In the natural, a person wounded in the head can no longer make effective use of the rest of his equipment. He may be a very brave and efficient soldier and have excellent equipment, but when he is wounded in the head, it becomes very difficult for him to make effective use of his ability and his equipment.
It is also important to understand the parallel view of our study in 1 Thessalonians 5:8 which uses the hope of salvation with reference to the helmet. We can realize that the protection for the mind is hope, but the protection for the heart is faith. Hope in your mind is an essential part of your salvation experience. Keep on hoping in Christ as you put on your helmet of salvation. Don’t give up hope, be optimistic. Hope protects your mind.
My hope is in you Oh Lord, therefore I am protected in this spiritual battle.
