ACHAN SINNED AGAINST THE GOD OF ISRAEL”

SCRIPTURE READING: Joshua 7:1-12
MEMORY VERSE:
Achan replied “It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel” – Joshua 7:20a
Disobedience is the foundation of sin. God clearly instructed Israel through Joshua how Israel was to overthrow Jericho. They were to go round Jericho once everyday with all the armed men, for six days. On the seventh day, they were to march round the city seven times, with the seven priests blowing the trumpets. At the sound of a long trumpet blast, the people were to give a loud shout and the walls around the city would collapse.
God categorically told Israel to keep away from the devoted things so that they would not bring about their own destruction. Otherwise, they would make the camp of Israel liable to destruction.
But Achan disobeyed, lusted after a “beautiful robe, silver and gold”, and stole them, dug the ground in his tent and hid them inside the ground.
Why did all his family – wife, sons and daughters and all his properties have to perish with him?
God is God and His word cannot be compromised. In the Ten Commandments, the second commandment states “…punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me” (Exodus 20:15)
Let us beware that our sins do not affect the generations yet to be born.
FOR MEDITATION:
• Do I have any sin in my life that may not affect me alone?
• Have I noticed any predicament in my life, the cause of which was ancestral?
PRAYER:
Father in Heaven; forgive me the sins of my ancestors for which I have become a victim in Jesus’ name. Amen.
THOUGHT:
Confession is the key that opens the door to forgiveness
